9th Annual Fall Festival & Bluegrass Event NOVEMBER 6, 2010 |
|
KENAN'S MILL FESTIVAL This is a celebration of rural life and traditions in the Black Belt of Alabama. Harkening back to the days when families drove their wagons full of corn to the mill to have it ground into meal, the large water-powered stones of the grist mill will again grind corn into cornmeal on Saturday, Nov. 6. Gates open 9 am to 5 pm; live music 11 am to 5 pm. This year's festival will have several unique events including a raffle of a beautiful handmade quilt. There will be many of Selma's best artists on hand providing the public with a rare opportunity to see some of the best local art as well as arts and craft vendors. Shop for gifts (and for yourself) as you browse through stalls of pottery, baskets, bird houses, wood carvings, and more. Live music starts at 11 am with Caleb Bryant. Caleb is a young fiddler who has won many competitions and currently plays fiddle in CrimsonGrass - a bluegrass Gospel Group in the West Alabama area. Caleb began playing the fiddle when he was four years old. God has blessed him to be able to progress into quite a fiddle player. You'll be shocked as you listen to this young man. You'll have to remind yourself that he's only 9 years old!! Next up will be the Grasshopper Stringband. You will be entertained by this non-traditional bluegrass band playing tunes such as Wagon Wheel, Cheap Whiskey and Deep River Blues. The Grasshopper Stringband is proud to be able to share with you a piece of the Alabama Black Belt's musical tradition. Next will be The Carrell Family Bluegrass Gospel Band. This family band located in northeast Alabama with Father, Mother, Son and Daughter sing and play instruments to glorify the Lord.
Other activities include corn-grinding demonstrations as well as tours of the mill, cottage, and demonstration gardens. You can also walk across the swinging bridge to see the "beehive" kiln where you can test the acoustics by vocalizing in the very center. A vintage 1951 Ford tractor will be providing free wagon rides for the kids starting at 10. The children will also love the "hands-on" pottery workshop, face painting, and popup inflatable activities. When you work up an appetite, head for the vittles wagon for favorites such as hamburgers, hotdogs, Hoppin' John and beverages, or calm your sweet tooth with some home-made cookies or a fried apple pie. Admission is only $5 per carload, so bring several friends. Spend the day at Kenan's Mill. You will feel like you have experienced a little bit of times gone by. The usual seating of hay bales will be available, but you may bring a chair to sit on while you enjoy the music and wonderful atmosphere. Only service animals allowed. No pets.
A BRIEF
HISTORY
Kenan's Mill was built in the mid 1800's and produced water-ground meal, grits and corn for over 100 years. The grounds also include a fascinating 19th Century brick charcoal kiln. Kenan's Mill was built and continuously owned by the Kenan family until Elizabeth Kenan Buchanan donated it to the Historic Society in 1997. Restoration is ongoing, and the mill is currently operating on special occasions. for more details...
